It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas! While this season is lovely with the decorations around town and festive events, it doesn’t magically happen. This time of year, there is hard working staff behind the scenes making Canyon look like a set of a Hallmark Christmas movie.
The City’s Parks and Rec department work tirelessly this time of the year to hang lights and banners and put up trees and set decorations. This includes on City properties, light poles across town and the Square. They also make the inside of City Hall festive by delivering poinsettias to the offices and decorating a Christmas tree in the foyer.
This weekend is a busy one for Canyon with annual Christmas in Canyon celebration. The Canyon Chamber of Commerce works with different community entities to make this time all-inclusive and special.
Canyon Main Street is a City department that helps promote the town and provides events with the same mission. It has its part in Christmas in Canyon, as well. Evelyn Ecker, director of Business and Community Development for the City, and her staff help to coordinate efforts to make events such as these run smoothly and efficiently.
While Canyon Chamber of Commerce does the lion’s share of events for Christmas in Canyon, Canyon Main Street will hold visits with Santa from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 2 in the Texas Room of the Cole Community Center. This coincides with the pancake dinner by Canyon Lions Club from 4-7 p.m., also in the Cole Community Center.
Saturday evening will also feature the Magical Parade of Lights at 6:30 p.m., starting and ending at Happy State Bank. This event will feature local youth and children’s organizations. Immediately following the parade, the City of Canyon will hold its official Christmas tree lighting ceremony with local youth choirs. That’s when you’ll see the City’s Parks and Rec crew again working hard to set up bleachers and run sound for this annual tradition.
Canyon Chamber of Commerce will also have a Toys For Tots drop box available Saturday evening to collect donations of new toys for area children in need.
Canyon EDC and Canyon Chamber of Commerce are also working together for the Eat Drink & Shop Local Contest, which takes place Dec. 2-20. By participating, one can be eligible to win a $250 Visa gift card. For rules and details of the contest, go online to www.canyonchamber.org.
